3 Reasons to Join a Team

There are so many reasons to join a social sport team – but we’ve pinned down the top three, just in case you weren’t convinced that you need 👏 this 👏 in 👏 your 👏  life 👏

1. The Fitness Aspect

It’s no secret that in our day-to-day lives, sometimes our physical health gets put on the backburner. We totally get it, and we’re all guilty of it. Most of us work long hours, whether it be our job, our studies, even social commitments. After a long day, of course you’d rather flop onto the couch, watch Netflix and actually chill.

However, when you’re part of a team… what’s that? It’s a good old text from your mate that says “So pumped for tonight! Bring your A-game team! 💪” Suddenly you have to get up and out the door!

Joining a team is a terrific way to be accountable for that physical goodness that your mind, body & soul crave. Sometimes, getting out and about, feeling that adrenaline and even grabbing the win can be all you need to turn your week from average to gggrrrreat!

Team sports in particular can help improve communication, strength, fitness level, coordination, and of course teamwork. Perhaps improving on these skills is something that your daily life could actually benefit from. And what a fun way to do it!

2. The Social Life

Sometimes catching up with your BFF can actually be a struggle, especially in the adult years when we no longer have high school to organise the catch ups for us! Conflicting schedules are really tricky. However, there is a solution. If you and your mate happen to have the same evening free each week – why not join a team together? Perhaps you’ve even got enough friends interested in a sport to create an entire team and register at a sporting venue.

This is one way that you’re guaranteed to see your friends on the regular which really can impact a busy life in such a positive way, simply by having a sporty sesh one or two nights a week!

If you don’t have the chance to join a team with a friend – maybe you’ve moved, maybe you just don’t have any mates interested in the sport – well, why not fly solo?

We’ve all been in the daunting situation of rocking up to a place where you don’t know anyone. But remember, you’re all in the same boat, and social sports are like an expressway to becoming mates. Learning names? You’ll have that down by the first game. Imagine where you’ll be by the end of the season!

It’s also a new opportunity to expand your friendship group and network with your surrounding community. The more connected we are with our environment and the people around us, the happier we are.

Why not expand your circle and extend that olive branch to some awesome people in your area. You never know what could come of it!

3. The Brain Loves it

Let’s face it, life can be stressful. We have heaps of commitments and sometimes we can feel like we’re being stretched too thin. So you may be thinking – I just don’t have the time. Certainly understandable – however – you may just find that taking this time for yourself can reduce the stress, rather than add to it.

One of the most beneficial parts of joining a team is the effect it can have on your mental health.

Have you ever felt super anxious, gone for a walk, got your heart rate up, your blood pumping – and suddenly feel a whole lot better? Perhaps not 100%, but maybe enough to get your racing mind back under control.

Regular exercise can help release those nourishing brain chemicals, like endorphins and serotonin, that help reduce stress, anxiety, and can even help you sleep better.

Mental health is an important thing to care for. And it may just be exercise, paired with some other helpful tools that can help keep a harmonious balance in that beautiful mind of yours.

Another amazing thing that can increase good mental health and reduce stress? Friends!

It may seem simple, but during our day to day, we often forget to carve out that time to see people we love. It’s so important to have a solid support network. When we’re too busy and put our social lives last, feelings of loneliness can creep in – we’ve all felt it, and it isn’t very fun. This can contribute to depression, anxiety & stress.

A regular catch up session with some good people every week is a great way to get in the exercise you need, AND get a social fix. Not only this, but you may that someone who is able to help a teammate if they’re going through a rough patch. It’s all give and take, and expanding that network of wonderful people in your life to care for, and who care for you can only be a good thing.

Self care is a priority!

Looking after yourself is not something that should be rescheduled. If you’re struggling to find ways to do this, joining a social sport team could be the solution you’ve been searching for.
