It’s all about the aesthetics

Wanting to take a world trip but not sure where to start? Well if you’re a sports fan or just like some pretty neat public art spaces, this post is tailor made for you. So here we are, introducing five of the most A E S T H E T I C courts around the globe.

Choi Hung Estate Basketball Court, Hong Kong

To get the ball rolling *pun intended* we’ll start with Choi Hung. Way to make this apartment block a super trendy photo op! Choi Hung Estate was originally built to provide affordable housing. The colourful paint job was used to create a happy environment for families and fact is, Choi Hung actually means “rainbow” in Cantonese.
Beautiful.

City of Aalst, Belgium

Check out this Belgian bad boy that’s full of Memphis style. Designed by Katrien Vanderlinden, according to designboom, it took 137 litres of paint. ‘I had to work within the rectangle of the court, that was the natural canvas and I also wanted to maintain the lines of the basket game. I like the fact that you can play the basketball game and that this design creates extra spaces for children to make up their own games. The colours are an ode to the memphis style, back in the 80s, when basketball and hip hop was booming.’ – Katrien Vanderlinden. An awesome addition to the community.

Art Installation x Basketball Court, Crystal City

Art meets sport – if this doesn’t get your community wanting to play some seriously fun Basketball, I don’t know what will. This incredible artwork was painted by No Kings Collective in Crystal City, VA – definitely check out their other mural work @nokingsdc (it’s awesome!)

Lois O’Hara, Brighton UK

This one is a really special court, designed specifically to aid a community and renovate an old Basketball court. Designed by the lovely Lois O’Hara, she explains her reason for completely revamping this court; ‘My aim was to bring colour and motion to the deteriorating court as a way of encouraging the community to use the area once again, I hope the space brings people together.’

Pigalle Basketball Court, Paris

The list wouldn’t be complete without Pigalle, right? This court was envisioned and created by Stéphane Ashpool, Pigalle, Ill-Studio and NIKE, and is famous for it’s cool 80’s vibe. Is it popular? You better believe it is. A great spot for the community to come together and shoot some hoops on one of the most famous courts in the world.
